2014 football world cup is nearing its termination and has already shown us many sides of the game. The tournament is already stated as the biggest so far, with the number of goals crossing the 150 mark with a high chance of breaking the maximum goal record in world cups. We saw a goal in the first 30 seconds and one in the last 30 seconds. The world cup was full of many such instances, and we bring to you 10 Incidents to make you laugh, be surprised and cry!
#10 Spain’s Reign Ends
The champions entered the competition with great hopes and a lot of responsibility. Their first match was against the Dutch. The team led by Robin Van Persie eradicated the champion’s hopes of a good start by beating Spain 5-1.The champions crashed out of the tournament after Chile beat them in the next match 2-0. They returned to form in the last match against Australia but it was too late for a start.

#9 That’s a team header
Football has witnessed many splendid tackles. But the match between Croatia and Columbia saw an unlikely scene. In the 90th minute of the match, while Cameroon were losing 4-0, Cameroon defender, Benoit Assou-Ekotto head-butted fellow teammate Benjamin Moukandjo after trading a few heated words with him. Their teammate Pierre Webo had to break the fight as it seemed they overlooked the match and became determined to fight.
#8 The Lightning Goal
It was USA vs Ghana, a match of the group stage. The ball left Clint Dempsey’s foot and was netted in the first 30 seconds of the game. The goal is the fastest of the tournament so far and the fifth fastest in world cup history. The goal left the crowd surprised and the opponent team in sheer shock.
#7 The Pepe Header
The game between Germany and Portugal saw a surprising scenario. Thomas Muller of Germany was fouled by Pepe by a stray hand to the face in the 37th minute. What seemed a normal free kick; Pepe decided to heat things up more by bumping his head to Muller’s. This act earned Pepe a glorious red card leaving an already thrashed Portugal side to 10 men.
#6 Extreme celebrations are injurious to health
When Daniel Sturridge equalised against Italy, the team’sphysiotherapist went into a wild mode and celebrated so hard that he dislocated his ankle and had to be flown home. Well that’s passion and commitment for the team

#5 The tears of pride
Ivory Coast midfielder Serey Die was sobbing overwhelmingly during the national anthem before their match with Columbia. It was a site which filled many supporters’ eyes with tears too. Serey later slashed the rumours about his father dying before the match stating that his father died in 2004 and his tears were a result of the feeling of representing their country at the event.

As soon as Ivory Coast’s Wilfried Bony equalized the score against Greece, their goalkeeper had something special in his mind.Boubacar Barry went amusingly crazy celebrating the goal and bit some grass and went to pose near a camera. The whole stadium applauded with laughter at this sight.
#3 The Heat is on
Well England was losing 2-1 to Italy and Italy’s Pirlo had just struck the bar with a risky free kick. Not to mention the stakes were high and so were the player’s energy levels. So as the ball went out for a goal kick, the ball boy was just a tad late to throw the ball to England’s goalkeeper Joe Hart. In return to this favour from the ball boy, Hart happily abused him and then asked for the ball.
#2 Fluke or Fix?
The match between Nigeria and Bosnia raised many eyebrows. Questions rose over the referee after he disallowed a Bosnian goal. The disputed goal was scored by Bosnia’s Edin Dzeko in the 21st minute. Further shock rose as the referee was clearly seen laughing with a Nigerian player after the match terminated.
#1 Stay away from Suarez, he bites!
It was Italy vs Uruguay and the loser would head home. In the 79th minute, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez came near Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini and bit him in the shoulder. The latter tried to show the referee the bite mark but Suarez escaped. It was the third time Suarez bit a player. The Uruguay forward became the laughing stock all over the world and jokes spread like wildfire. Later he was banned by FIFA for 4 months.
